Shit like this just proves what a total hero Derek Bailey was. This is somehow even weirder than that funk album he made (Mirakle, 2000). "Hey, I'm in my 60's, let's have some DJ churn out ultra-generic drum 'n' bass beats for me to throw my weird guitar stuff over." Hilarious, baffling, puzzling. Derek Bailey will be sorely missed.

Thanks! I love this Zorn-produced Derek Bailey stuff. I read an interview with Derek Bailey, where he told a story about his original concept for this album. He lived in the Hackney area of London, and he'd tune in to this pirate radio station. He really got into jungle and the then-nascent drum n' bass, and when he was talking to John Zorn about his next recording, Bailey said that he'd like to have the DJ's from the pirate station lay down some drum n' bass tracks that he could improvise with. Zorn told him that, because of musician's union recording rules, that he had to hire somebdody, which is how they ended up with the DJ on this album. Bailey said later that he thought that the record would have been better with the guys from the pirate station in his neigborhood. His collaborations with the Ruins (Saisoro and Tohjinbo) are great, too. Thanks again!
